Torsion Springs

There are 2 different varieties of torsion springs which are dependent on the amount of panels the door has. A 5 panel door takes standard springs and a 6 panel door takes caravan door springs. They fall into the same weight categories but the caravan door springs have a longer travel to compensate for the longer door.

Please note that springs are non returnable and will only be sold according to the weight of the door. If you are unsure of the weight, please visit our Videos page for weighing a door to ensure you order the correct spring. Please note that, due to metal fatigue, springs wear out over time and it is highly inadvisable to re tension them. Rather replace them with new, correct ones. This task can also be extremely dangerous so rather get a trained professional to do this.

Please note the following regarding torsion springs:

  • If the weight of the door is 160kg in total, you will need two 80kg springs so its best to order a pair with the weight spec of half the total door weight each.
  • Torsion springs are sold individually, not in pairs.
  • When fitting your springs or any hardware, the red is on the left hand side and the black is on the right hand side.
  • If your garage door has only one spring, the new spring must have the same weight rating as the total door weight. Please take note of the centre bearing and look at which side the bulge is on. This is the bearing housing and also serves to centre the spring. Different centre bearings have this housing on different sides so be sure to get one for that specific side.
  • Your springs must be tensioned equally, if they are tensioned unevenly, they will combat each other and not work correctly.
  • If your springs are worn or incorrectly tensioned, it may well cause damage to your motor, remember, the springs lift the door, the motor only tells the door where to go.
